FV-60, Hamburger Recall , Performed by Laura H. (below)
*Text and Video Copyright © 2007 Channel54News.com™ Channel 54 is working with the Food and Drug Administration at this hour to get the word out about a massive hamburger recall affecting the local region shown on your screen now. The recall involves a staggering 455,000 pounds of ground beef distributed through a variety of retail grocery chains here. Authorities say there are probably no brands that are not affected. It seems a computer glitch at a large meat processing plant caused the accidental mixing of beef with a quantity of ground earthworms which were intended for an animal food plant in Australia. Authorities say the earthworms would have ended up as "mink food", purchased by mink farmers because of its high protein content. As near as anyone can tell, said an FDA spokesperson, the mix that went out to local grocery stores is about 50-50, ground beef and ground earthworms. It's unknown at this time if the earthworms pose any disease or health hazard, or if the problem is just one of taste and sensibilities, but it's a fairly sure bet there aren't many consumers who want to eat the worm meat even if it's safe. The processing plant has apologized and says it will do whatever is necessary to remove the worm-burger meat from store shelves, but admits that will be tough because markets have been selling the mix to consumers for about three weeks now and countless hundreds of thousands of home freezers are, or were, stocked with it. We'll bring you updates as they become available. This has been Casey Miles reporting, and now, back to our regularly scheduled programming.
