We're following a breaking story at this hour involving an out-of-control blaze that threatens to consume an entire building in this neighborhood. Additional fire support has come in from neighboring precincts to help battle the flames. Authorities have traced the inferno’s origins to lit candles on a birthday cake during a party for the oldster shown here -- well, we hope to have that image in a moment. Partygoers watched in horror as the flames from an unknown number of candles soared higher and higher, virtually vaporizing the cake and eventually spreading to furniture and curtains. Several victims were treated for smoke inhalation and firemen say they were lucky to get anyone out alive. The guest-of-honor reportedly tried to re-enter the smoldering structure to retrieve some presents, but an onlooker convinced the person to forget the cheesy gifts and to just get to safety. The birthday celebrator was quoted as saying, "I owe them my life… I do." No word yet on just how many candles were on the cake that started the blaze. When asked by investigators, partygoers just looked at the ground and refused to answer. This is Casey Miles, reporting for channel 54 news. And now, back to our regularly scheduled programming.
